Frequently Asked Questions Q:How do I Register?
STEP 1: Click "Register" at the top menu of the NUS Second Life website (http://u.nus.edu.sg/secondlife) to load the login page.
You will see a page similar to the one shown above STEP 2: If you have an existing Second life account, click "I have already created an avatar at SecondLife.com". Otherwise, click "I want to create my avatar now".
STEP 3: Enter your avatar's first and last names that you have registered in Second Life. Please note that the system is case sensitive.
STEP 4: A verification email will be sent.Access your NUSNET email to retrieve the email. Click on the link provided to verify your account.Note that this must be done within 24 hours. If not you will have to register again.
STEP 3A: Enter the first name and choose a last name for your avatar as you desire (you do not need to put your real name as it functions like a nickname, but do note that avatar names are permanent and unchangeable, as such you are strongly encouraged to put in a meaningful name). STEP 3B: Enter your real life date of birth in the appropriate boxes.
**Note: If you are unable to register your name, it is likely that your name is already taken. Please key in another name or select another last name. Also ensure that you have also read and comply Terms and Conditions.
STEP 4: Check your email for the password generated for your account. (You are encouraged to change you the password to one which you desire, for more information please refer to “How do I change my password?”.)
STEP 5:Proceed to https://exchange.nus.edu.sg/ to log in to your emaill.
Congratulations! You are now ready to start!
STEP 6: As a final step, download the Client and run it to begin your Second Life.
Q:How do I change my password?
STEP 1: Click on the “Login” link at the right hand corner of www.secondlife.com. STEP 2: Key in the avatar name and password which you have retrieved from your email.
STEP 3: After login, you will see a page similar to the one shown above. Click "Change password".
STEP 4: Change your password by filling up the respective fields as the page indicates. (There will be a bar showing below your desired new password will indicate the strength of the password. You are recommended to key in a strong password for security reasons.) (green=strong)(yellow=medium)(red=weak)
Q:How do I take Snapshots/Pictures?
STEP 1: Click on the “Snapshot” button located at the bottom of the screen. STEP 2: A window for your Snapshot preview will pop up. Ensure "Show interface in snapshot" is checked. STEP 3: Pan your camera around to take your desired shot and click "Refresh Snapshot". STEP 4: Click "Save" to save your snapshot.
Q:How do I communicate with people?
STEP 1A: Hit enter to see a “chat-bar” at the bottom of the screen as shown in the illustration.
STEP 1B: Hit enter again once you have typed your message.
STEP 2: To view previous messages from other people, click the "Communicate" button at the bottom left to open the chat history box. Q:How do I add friends?
STEP 1: Right-click the avatar whom you wish to add and select "ADD FRIEND". STEP 2: Click OK to send an invitation.
When the avatar has accepted your friendship offer, you will receive a confirmation message on the top right hand corner. You will be able to see your friends under the contacts tab (refer to illustration above).
Q:How do I move/How do I look at myself and my surroundings ?
To move your avatar, use the arrow keys located at the bottom right of your keyboard. Alternatively, you can use the keys w,s,a,d. To look at your surroundings, you can hold your "alt" key located beside the spacebar of your keyboard and your drag mouse while holding the left mouse button to move and pan your camera. You can zoom in on an object by scrolling the middle mouse button while moving and panning the camera. Hold onto the “alt” key and left click on your avatar to see yourself.
If you are having trouble using the keyboard and mouse to move/look around, you can use the movement and camera controls by checking them under "View" located at the menu bar at the top of the screen. This allows you to control your movement and camera by clicking on the arrows with a mouse. Q:How do I fly?
Q:I am sick flying and walking. How do I get to a place quicker? Where is everyone?
Q:Help! I can’t find the answers that I need!
If there is any question that you might like to ask, the fastest way to get your answer is to approach us in-world (inside NUS Second Life). Chances are quite high that some of us will be online in Second Life when you are there! If you don’t see our avatars, click on any picture with an online sign beside it on the Board located in front of the University Hall (where your avatar first appeared) and wait for help. Alternatively, you may email us at ridgecat@groups.nus.edu.sg.
Q:I am having problems with registration. What should I do?
If you receive a message showing that your account is logged in, it means that you have registered. In the event that the avatar name does not coincide with yours or should there be any complications, please contact an Administrator by sending an email to hangout @groups.nus.edu.sg.
