Registration of Level-5000 FASS Modules

Dear Undergraduates

Some of you have expressed interest in reading level-5000 modules to fulfil major requirements.  You are allowed to read a maximum of 2 level-5000 modules, in lieu of your level-4000 module requirements.  You will need to obtain the department’s approval and fulfil the module pre-requisites, if any.

Starting from AY2009-10, level-5000 FASS modules offered to undergraduates will be worth 5MC each and will have the suffix ‘R’ (for example: EC5555R).

As the registration for level-5000R modules will be done manually, you are advised to take the following steps:

(1) Check the timetable of the level-5000 modules that you intend to read.

(2) Ensure that there are no timetable clashes.  If there are, we will drop the module for you.

(3) Approach your major Department for approval.

(4) If your request to read a level-5000R module is approved, it will be pre-allocated to you at 1 bid point, from your programme account.

For further clarification, please send an email to FASHELP.

New General Education Module - GEK1900 Public Health in Action

The Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) is excited to announce the introduction of a General Education Module, GEK1900 Public Health in Action, offered in Semester 2, AY2012/2013. This module will be offered to all undergraduates as GEM Type C.

Classes will be held every Tuesdays, 9AM to 12 NN, Seminar style.

So what is GEK1900 Public Health in Action about?

Public health is in the news every day, from schools closing due to hand, foot and mouth disease to the banning of trans-fats in an entire city. But what is public health? Whereas doctors treat individual patients, public health is about the health of a whole population. Despite its importance, public health seems obscure and mysterious.

This module uses a population-based perspective to understand the broad forces behind development of disease and ill-health. Employing the evidence-based framework, expert lecturers will share experiences, discuss current issues and debate ethical dilemmas from cancer to pandemics, from AIDS to diabetes, from diet to disasters.

For more information about the module and assessments, please check it out in IVLE.
